    De-Icing Reach In's

What is the best way to de-ice a reach in cooler or freezer in a busy restaurant?

De energize the condensing unit, allow evap fans to run . . . . See you tomorrow! .. lol. Been a long time since I've done restaurant refer but when it's extremely busy this was the only way. I've tried other ways but they were all a p.i.t.a when the place was busy

I disconnect the cond, unit. Leave my heat gun running inside while it's circulating the air around! It's like an oven after 15 mins. Usually max 20 mins then the ice is all off.

How bad do they need it? If they can wait til tomorrow, disconnect condensing unit. If not, put pans underneath the coil and hit it with hot water from a chemical sprayer. You can flush out the condensate pan and drain lines at the same time.

I use pans and hot water a lot. Frequently, the ice and/or frost isn't nearly as bad to remove as I initially think it is. I like to say I insist that ALL product is removed from the box, but I unfortunately have to work around food often.

If they are busy then yes disconnect the condensing unit and come back later. But most restaraunts really need these units so if you can hit the evap with hot water (from a pump sprayer or hose to the mop sink)you would have a happier customer. And it dosent take that long you should be in and out fairly quick.

I used to find that me working while they were busy irritated their staff just as much as it irritated me. These places simply wouldn't empty everything out if it wasn't completely necessary. And if I have to get behind the unit by pushing it out further was aggravating to the people trying to work. I would only do simple repairs while they are open and serving. Otherwise see ya during prep time in the a.m. lol

I use 2 old hair dryers. The old 1960's style the girls used for beehive style. They have their own case with zippers. They have a long plastic hose with a hair cap at the end. I just cut the hair cap off and use the hose. Set the hair dryer inside the box worm the hose to the evaporater and set it on high. Works great on true boxes

In the supermarkets that want it deiced right away, shut off the coil and deice with hot water. I use a 50 gallon garbage can and a utility pump with a garden sprayer. Knocks it out quick. Hop the floor drains are clear
