Where have all the techs gone? I have added 2 service techs in the last 6 months and with the department growing I need another but the pool of qualified applicants just is not there. We have tried expensive print ads, all kinds of internet ads including some of the more expensive options, word of mouth... Nothing. I have plenty of pizza delivery guys, landscapers, and tech school students applying but no solid guys with a few years under their belts. If I get one more resume from a pizza guy sporting an email address like "bong_hitzzz_2001@gmail.com" I will shoot myself! Any ideas, where have all the good techs gone? Position starts in the high 20's to low 30's for the right guy, potential into the low 40's with tenure, insurance $50 a week for family, newer truck, 401K, low stress with nobody doggin' you all day... Just need someone we don't have to babysit who wants to put in a little effort, is that too much to expect these days?
Rant over, thanks for listening!

Unfortunately the pool of qualified technicians is shrinking rapidly. Us old dinosaurs are leaving the trade faster than the younger replacements are coming in.
We hired a person about 18 months ago. 25 years old, right out of college, worked as an electricians "gopher" while in college. Schooled and has a degree as an English Teacher!!
Will be a leader in supermarket refrigeration in the future. Took to supermarket refrigeration like a duck to water. Awesome work ethic, excellent critical and logical thinking. I'd take a dozen of them. He is the exception rather than the rule.
Good luck with your search!!Jim
