programmable thermostat for baseboard heating

We have a vacation home in Canada that we rent out during the winter. The renters turn up the heat and don't turn it back down when they leave, resulting in unnecessary heating costs until the next renter shows up. I am looking for a thermostat that automatically reduces the temperature either after a set time (like 24 hours) or when it no longer senses motion in a room for a few hours. I can't find any thermostats that do this for electrical baseboard heating. Does anyone know of any equipment that does this? I would even consider thermostats that can be monitored and controlled over the internet, but cost is an issue.

Failing all else you could contract with a competent, licensed electrician to install a low voltage (24volt) standard thermostat that would fit your needs along with a transformer/relay system to control the heaters. I don't know of a line voltage (110v/220v) control system made to do these things. Lots of low voltage (24v) systems out there though.

t. Electrical supply houses sell programmable line volt timers that I have used to operate blowers. Look into honeywell pro 8000 line volt stats they have a 240v programmable stat

There are programable line voltage thermostats available. While the strips could be controlled remotely, major control system changes and wiring would be necessary and costly.

The above suggestion are the sure fire way to fix your issue.

However, do you just trust that things are left in acceptable conditions when renters leave or is there a post/pre inspection done with a property manager?

Why not include a clause in rental agreement stating they are responsible for additional costs, to cover it if they forget?

You can also have a contractor install digital stats for your application that will allow you to login over the Internet and adjust the temperature remotely. Although expensive they are ideal. You can turn all the stats to your desired temperature from your couch 10,000 miles away
