I agree. Very interesting information.

Sometimes, I wonder about dogs. The very same animals that can eat roadkill and garbage, roll in the foulest smelling stuff they can find, drink puddle water and do just fine, turn around and wind up with sensitive stomachs for the expensive food we buy and put in their bowls.

I would never have thought about some of the stuff that you posted, Space Racer, and I must admit to being guilty of almost everything you posted about.

why is this? do you leave food out for him all day? i feed my dog 2 cups twice per day. plus he gets a dog "biscut" every time he comes in from outside and i give him a beggin strip when we go to bed every night. he waits for me to go to bed every night unless it gets to be after midnight.lol.
does anyone elses dog know when it's time to eat? like clockwork at 6:30 he stares at us with ears up and as soon as you move he jumps. funny as h#@l

I feed my lab Iams and have never paid more than half price for a bag (sometimes much less). Go on Ebay and look up "free Iams dog food." Breeders get coupons for free any size up to 40lb bags. These coupons usually go for $35-40 for two, but if you watch them you can sometimes get them for much less. The coupons have worked at any store I've tried to use them at.

I feed my 70 lb aussie 2 cups of Victor dog food once a day. It's made here in the us, TX to be exact. It runs me about $1.00 lb, not bad, not cheap, high quality food for a reasonable price.

Thanks for the tip. I finally used up my previous bag and made the switch to Victor, based on your recommendation and a little reading on the net. The feedback from customers on the Dog Food Advisor website is all good. My dog loves it.

I couldn't figure out which one to buy, so I got the cheapest 20 lb bag I could find at the local general store, which was the Beef Meal and Brown Rice for about $18. Victor is about the same price as Authority, the Petsmart brand, which is not rated as high.

Victor wasn't listed on dogfoodanalysis or dogfoodscoop.

Freezing was definitely the answer for preserving the quality and taste of the dog food. I use bread bags when they are available and cheap storage bags when they aren't. I keep bread bags in oatmeal boxes a much as possible, where they are protected and easy to handle. Bread bags hold a lot of food, and oatmeal boxes allow for better use of space in the freezer, as well.
