Why is my filter full of soot?

Went on a call for a rental house where the tenant complained the furnace was dumping soot into the house and the filter was always black. Checked the combustion appliances and all were good.

Then I found this on the living room table





High capacity soot dispersal system.

Unfortunately the tenant was not home so I didn't get an explanation for it.

Yep. If it makes smoke, you get sooty filters

I had a customer swear up and down that it was the furnace that was causing her curtains to get black near the registers, not the 2 packs a day of Virgina Slims and the 20 candles she constantly burned.
