I thought you would all be interested in this extreme furnace and contractor shopping story that appears in today's Boston Globe (free registration may be required).
I am the subject of the story, and was sure to mention how HVAC-Talk helped me in the process. (There is a sidebar that is not shown online that also lists hvac-talk.com as a resource.)

Thanks for all your help (and continued assistance with the latest issue: temperature rise insufficient):

Nice plug. You might be the next moderator....
If everything was always done "by the book"....the book would never change.

Thanks guys... but I originated and moderated the Consumer Forum on CompuServe back in the 90s... and that was quite enough.

So you searched for the best and got good enough. Also after all that research you still had problems with the installation.
Sometimes dumb luck works better! I have seen people who know nothing get a great deal.

thank you for posting this - I was about to - I've gotten many many blanks stares here when I tell people how hard it is in New England to get contractors to do heat-calcs, measure Static pressure, and the like, when they quote a job, now I can point them to this thread!

Great thread! But, Uh Oh!, the link gives verboten information about system pricing which doesn't fly on this forum.
Otherwise, the article is very informative and a good read. Thanks

For doing such a good job you will receive a lifetime membership to HVAC-Talk. Congratulations.
I do believe that article is very useful to all who seek new HVAC systems to be installed. The better informed the public is, the least the "buyer beware" factor matters.Government is a disease......masquerading as its own cureEcclesiastes 10:2 NIV

actually, though the numbers in it do violate policy, it's such a good article, and so true of the conditions around here, that I think they should make an exception and copy/paste it into a thread so that it's not lost when the globe drops the link
