Nest tstat

I'm interested in the Nest thermostat. I've read they aren't compatible with variable speed air handlers. My current tstat, a Lux has just 4 wires (R-Y-G-W)
I don't understand why the Nest won't work? When I enter my wire colors, the compatability checks as compatible, but I've read that it doesn't support variable speed units? I thought variable speed units were the norm nowadays, but maybe I'm just in the minority of the households that have one.
