Furnace service call I ran into a couple of years ago. Furnace was vented into the metal chimney. Needless to day it was easy to sell them on some new venting. I even went as far as talking to the local supply house that sold the unit to the "contractor" and showed them the picture. Gives them something to think about, when they sell to anybody that walks through the door.

Looks like a Fernco fitting. A rubber coupling with metal hose clamps. They're made for joining sewer/waste pipes.

and some mfrs use them for the furnace connection so removing it does not require cutting.

as for the supply house, they do not care where their money comes from, for the most part.

once out the door, they have no liability anyway.
