Coil condenser unit mismatch - issue with Home warranty

    Hi Experts,

    i have below A/C unit

    Condenser : 38BRC048-351
    Evaporator coil : CK5BXA042021-AAAA

I have water leak in inside unit. i called my home warranty, the tech said since evaporator coil is 3/12 ton and outside unit 4 ton the evaporator coil ice-up and ice melts and drips onto the floor.

Tech is suggesting to replace the coil with 4-ton. But home warranty is not covering the expense saying they don't cover mismatched system.

Is the tech and home warranty company correct ? Please advise.

Yeah, a bigger outdoor smaller indoor will cause nothing but problems, especially if its a heat pump.

It is an AC system. Though it is not a rated match, I highly doubt that is causing the coil to freeze. Get a second opinion.

Looks like a Carrier. I'd check match ups with Carrier. I doubt it is a match. But they did some weird stuff a few years ago, whereas the new coils rating was the same as the older coil and you would actually put a smaller replacement coil on and it was the same as the older larger coil. I believe is was post CK coil though. But it never hurts to check. If it's a new problem and its been working for a few years. They are full of poop, they just don't want to fix it and charge you more.
I like DIY'ers. They pay better to fix.

It probably can be fixed, but not for free. The home warranty is a scam. Either pay the first company to fix it, or call another company and pay them to fix it.

Ask home warranty to send a different company for a second opinion

Thank you all for the input. The Tech said he already checked with Carrier but i will again double check.

The unit was working fine for 9 yrs now. Will getting the coil cleaned resolve the problem ?

That match isn't causing freezeups. Likely that coil is leaking, running low on charge is the culprit. I didn't find a rating for that unit with a 42 coil but if anything, it reduces capacity & SEER just a hair. Warranty companies will find any loophole to screw you and get out of a claim.

As others said, its not the smaller coil causing the freeze up. There are a couple other things that can cause it to freeze up. The tech probably just aw the mismatch, and thought easy easy sell.

I highly doubt the equipment "mismatch" is causing the indoor coil to freeze.

Back before the 13 SEER minimum efficiency mandate, Trane used to have ARI rated matchups using things like 3.5 ton indoor coils with 5 ton outdoor units. I'd think Carrier had similar equipment setups rated together.

It also isn't unusual to find that the only difference between a 3.5 ton and a 4 ton coil is the factory installed metering device.
If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.
