You're going to find a variety of answers. Everyone has their own opinions. For R410, I like the Fiedlpiece SLR2 which is infared. For the other refrigerants, I like the Tek-mate and the trusty H10pm. I also use an ultrsonic, dye, bubble search, & N2 with trace gas. It depends upon the situation.

H-10pm. All our guys, including me, are switching to them because in field experience has shown they are that much more sensistive and accurate at picking up leaks if you take the time to learn how to use them properly. We have a bunch of Yellowjacket and Inficon leak detectors and they are not nearly as good at picking up small leaks when they work.

H10G or H10PM.
You should be able to score a serviceable unit within your budget. If you go with the battery powered unit, budget for a new cell.

Tif-zx, good all rounder. Been using mine for 18 months now.
Fieldpiece slr2k7 just bought mine, liking it so far, it does work a little different than others.
After that I use pressure test, blue bubbles, dye in extreme situations.
Most of the guys on my team have the h-10's which are good but a pain in the ass to find power on a roof the size of three football fields...
