Power surge damage
The power company had a high voltage beam fall on a lower voltage beam that caused major power surges and outages in our neighborhood damaging many appliances. We have a 2 zone unit with the smaller "upstairs" unit as the only one affected. The circuit board, and indoor fan motor were damaged. Upon inspection, the tech noticed that the coil needed to be replaced as well. (Leaking refrigerant) Is it possible the surge affected the coil as well ? The AC was used days before with no problem.

Probably not but the tech should be able to determine if it was, again I highly doubt it as there is usually no electricity within a foot or so of the evaporator coil
