I went on one where the units were split open and the cfm's were laying on the ground still running. I don't get it when they do that. It would take too long to scrap it there. It would only take 2 guys less than 2 minutes to kill disconnects chop refer lines and throw the whole thing in the back of a pickup where scrapping it would take 15-20 min.

Here in GA the salvage yards cannot buy it unless you have a trade license to show them... has helped some.

In SC you can either have a trade license or a permit, anyone can go to sheriffs dept and show drivers license and registration and get a 2 year scrapping permit. It's helped keep lazy people and those with warrants from doing it but it still happens pretty frequently.

I think it comes down to they are criminals and are not very smart to even turn the units off. Now saying that they do make some alarms that sense power loss and/or refrigerant loss, but i have never seen one in my area so i doubt the thieves know about them.

That has to be a sickening feeling for the owners of the equipment. If these people worked half as hard at a real legit job as they do at stealing copper out of ac units, they might have a chance at being somewhat successful....maybe.

Some welder guy is gonna make some $$$ building cages for those units. Funny how a business has to be ripped off before they will buy a cage... filters down into ALL our insurance policies.
