is that normal to hvae faint gas smell when lighting the pilot

I have a heatilator caliber model gas fireplace insert about 8years old. The unit was off most of the year. I did not recall gas smell in previous years. This year when lighting the pilot, I can smell the faint gas odor at the begining (when pushed the red ingition button), it was gone as long as the pilot light was lit. Also there was humming noise at the beginning, but after adjusted the Hi/Lo control, the noise was gone too, it looks fine. But is that normal to have gas smell when lighting the pilot? I called one professional, and was told as long as no smell during the operation, it should be OK. But I thought the firebox should be gas tight, not supposed to smell gas even with the pilot off. This is I was told by a heatilator representative. Should I have someone to check it?
