anyone having a problem finding good guys?
we are looking for 1-2 techs, 1 apprentice, and 1 parts guys for the shop, seams like its impossible to get anyone. even the local supply houses are having the same problem, it is absolute torchure getting stuff from the counter guys lately, no one knows anything and you might as well just go get the stuff yourself. i actually prefer doing it like that so i know its the right thing, not just what the counter guy thought it was.

Yep
Our top local supply house has just been bought out by a major chain that no-one likes to deal with. Theres alot of unreplaceable knowledge that will probably only be around for a year or so and then be relaced by some kid that only can respond ITS NOT IN THE COMPUTER!!

Around here I think the big problem with finding a good tech is paying that good tech. All companies want a good tech, but few (if any) are willing to pay enough to get the kind of tech they want.
I do consider myself pretty lucky though when it comes to supply houses. The big sheetmetal supply house always seems to have what we need. There are 2 big supply houses for parts, one in particular most always has what you need in stock... not to mention they have the knowledge to help aswell. Being green, often times I know what the problem is, but sometimes need some assistance with what the heck to do to fix that problem, thats where it's nice to have them behind the counter."If you call that hard work, a koalas life would look heroic."

i think the pay is also an issue, all of us are paid over scale but new hires are not, they are felt out at whatever the scale would be say for a mechanic 31.20/hr. and eventually get bumped up in 6-12 months. most good techs are already making more than scale so they would take a pay cut for a while.
dunno about the counter guys at abco, johnstone, and united. most of them have a chip on their shoulder.

Don't get me started. I'm a pretty laid back person. Ran ads for 3 techs and an office tech support person.
Spent all day yesterday finishing up the interviewing.
3 guys were to start today. Wanna know what happened....
1 guy still is a no call, no show.
1 guy came in at 10:30am, said traffic was bad. We start at 8am...
The other guy called in sick..at 9am...
And during the interview stage....Employees, if you want a job, and say you will be there at a certain time for the interview, have the courtesy to at least "call" if you are going to be late. Late to me is more than 30 minutes.
Now back to square one, as none of them are working for me.
Makes you as an owner want to "stick it" or play hard ball to the new hires that come next in line......

I see you are an rses affiliate,
have you kept in touch with your local rses chapter or put an ad. on rses.org? I am of the opinion that the best in the business are rses certified or atleast members.

LOL,
Naw, that is a totally different division.
Just pisses me off that I spent good money for these ads, treat my employyes like family, and then be treated like this.
Just had to rant.
And, some of you know my posting on here, and that I do pay, training, nice bonuses, etc etc etc.
Been a year deciding to hire more techs to take on more work....
Just don't know what it is with some people these days.....
