No way someone with four years experience would be this stumped, not have a manometer nor the basic knowledge to establish whether gas is present or not. I'm reasonably sure he was born with a nose - but I would not coach him to stick it anywhere near a furnace.

When I first came here I thought the same but after seeing the same thing over and over plus if you give a less qualified person instruction and they hut themselves then what. It's also a liability for the site owners if I'm not mistaken.

First of all what is up with all the insults everyone? writing in cap locks... Ok youngwiseman can you hear the gas valve click when 24 volts is applied to its coil. Do you hear gas hissing through the orifices on the burner manifold when the gas valve opens. Is your first orifice on manifold maybe clogged? If you suspect no gas than take your allen wrench and loosen the pressure tap on the inlet side of your gas valve and see if you have any, can you smell it?

Is your pressure switchs making contact when inducer is running. maybe your flue pipe is partially stopped up (waspers nest) and dropping out the gas valve when the pressure switch is going back and forth clicking in and out

Calling other members buttholes can get you time off.

He does not have a manometer, and he may not know it all like some of you do. Plus he does not punctuate his sentences. But so what? does that give everyone a licence to imply that he dumb and not even a service tech. Which is the greater insult?

Thats the big difference between the open and closed forums.
We talk among ourselves about if the guy is really a tech.
We decided he isn't a tech.
Thus, we give minimal, if any, help.

If you work on gas equitment, and you don't own some type of manometer, or water column, and you've been in the industry for years, then your doing a great dis-service to your customers.

If he is in the field he goes through the process, if he wants to ask on a closed forum then it's ok, sometimes people can pretend to be a tech, just a HO who is sneaky and wants free info. It's very possible he is an installer but he should have a tech to ask if so, and own a manometer to start up equipment.

Ask all the questions you want. Just don't expect answers. We may lead you to a place to find the answers and, if one is actually in the field it shoulden't be a problem. 15 posts and some credentials is pretty fair to get pro membership. Fact is there are students, installers, apprentices, instructors, and journeymen who have pro membership. You made a point earlier about boiler work. I've been in the industry 15 years and aside from changing circulating pumps and working on the combustion aspect of a boiler I'm clueless. The first journeyman I worked under had never touched a gas appliance. We understand that everyone has a niche they fit in. To not have the basic tools to check a system is not professional and possibly dangerous. So if being a butthole saves money and lives so be it. On a side note, If you're in this industry and your panties get all bunched up because of something someone said on the internet, dude you ain't gonna make it.

How does one make money in this business if they don't have the basic tools to do the job? In my world they are a priority. Having the correct tools and a good skill set makes me a more valueable employee, makes my job easier, makes me profitable, etc. .

I was in the business for over 20 years before I ever owned a manometer, been in it now over 35 years and probably have every worth while tool known to man related to this trade. My message was, we all don't start out with $10,000 worth of tools, some of us have to buy them when $$$ allow, if you were able to have every tool needed when you started in this trade, I have two words for you, YOUR BLESSED!
