DIRECT IGNITION PROBLEM SHOULD BE SIMPLE!

Hello, I have a customer who's heat is not working. I approach the furnace and see what I have, I jumped the r to w and everything did as its suppose to do ,when my burners lit it stayed on for about 4 to 8 seconds and shut off now from my knowledge and experience I have had a furnace that did this once before and it was simply the flame sensor rod needed cleaning. I tried to run the system twice, both times main burner shut off so I disconnected the flame sensor rod cleaned it with sand paper and also if that didnt work I was going to test it by disconnectng the the wire from the terminal and placing one lead on terminal and one lead on flame rod wire from my knowledge any direct current above 2,0 is good and below 1.6 is a bad flame rod but after I clean the rod and install it back into the furnace the hot surface igniter lights but burner want light at all, I do have 24 volts coming from ifc,to valve all switches are closed roll out limit switches etc they should because no reason for them to open when there is no fire.

From my knowledge I feel like its no gas pressure or no gas flow the gas valve has a coil ohm reading of 98.0 ohms I think thats about right because from another job I replaced a gas valve and the reading was 60 something and the new one read about 90 some thing or 100 ohms so gas valve I suspect is good. And the customer gas was just cut back on yesterday morning, and another thing that bothers me there is no shut off, drip tap, or union near this unit. So I feel the first 2 times the burners lit was old gas that was still in the line, first I need to see is the shut off open, I dont have a water manometer to check the gas pressure in and out the valve, any suggestions, I know the sequence of operation and all, I am a certified tech but nothing but 4 years experience still come across problen that I have to go back to my book for, I know I am in the ball park because to me heat cycle is very simple, worse case senario ifc is bad which I doubt. Input output is good or gas valve is not functioning correctly but I doubt also , and another thing the blink lights is one blink which mean ignition failure probable causes gas pressure no gas ,gas valve, flame sensor, and if this could be cause by a open limit or roll out or over temp stack let me know but I seriously doubt it because I think these open when burner is lit, let me know pros and service techs.

I lost you after this, but you never clean a flame sensor with sandpaper, steel wool at the most, I usually just use a dollar bill.

One all caps run-on sentence and this jumped out at me. You should not be touching the appliance without this most basic service tool.

Other than that please stop posting in all caps and add some punctuation.

Several "issues " and then some

I would address the gas pressure and and train not having union, drip leg,or gas cock are code violations to start with...

    Thumbs up

I've seen the bill trick when I was in training. Ya don't want to be rough on it. Good advice to new techs.

I never heard it called a water manometer, regardless, you need more than a manometer to do this job, and done by a trained professional. You can cause a lot of problems and dangers if you don't know what your doing.

It lit twice, then you cleaned the flame sensor, now it won't lite, what did you do?

You don't need a manometer to tell if you have gas pressure to a unit, just to know if you have the correct pressure. Think about it.

If the gas was just turned back on yesterday I would think the gas company would have bled the line, but maybe not if he ws green.

You say you have 24v to valve, does it "click", can you feel it?

You don't need a manometer to test for pressure but with no experience I don't want to tell him how to check though it should be a no brainier.

First of all what is up with all the insults everyone? writing in cap locks... Who cares? you don't have to read it if you don't want to and run on sentences? come on! be easy on youngwiseman I mean he is only seeking advice! don't shoot him down. hes been in the field 4 years, give him a break buttholes.

Ok youngwiseman can you hear the gas valve click when 24 volts is applied to its coil. Do you hear gas hissing through the orifices on the burner manifold when the gas valve opens. Is your first orifice on manifold maybe clogged? If you suspect no gas than take your allen wrench and loosen the pressure tap on the inlet side of your gas valve and see if you have any, can you smell it?

Is your pressure switchs making contact when inducer is running. maybe your flue pipe is partially stopped up (waspers nest) and dropping out the gas valve when the pressure switch is going back and forth clicking in and out

First, we don't do ANY step by step in the open forums.

Second, it does matter how he communicates, because style and substance are intertwined. If he can communicate clearly and succinctly, in an easy to read style, he will be much farther ahead in getting the info he needs. I stopped after about ten words, because I'm here to help, and not beat myself up trying to conform to an unconventional individual.

If this guy is a tech, he needs to get his post count up to 15 and apply for Pro membership, and learn how to interact on the forum, so he can really benefit from the experience of this online community.

Once he has Pro membership, he can ask technical questions in the Pro forums, and he will get lots of help.

    Fair enough? 'nuff said.

Well said, sometimes being tough makes the point sink farther.
We don't know this person is a tech, these are questions he should ask his lead tech, though it is very easy according to the title.
