Trane centrifugal control retrofit
The project I’m working is to retrofit the control of a centrifugal 2 stage R12 Trane unit.
The unit has oil DP switch (not transducers) and pulsed actuator motor (not stepper)
I want to keep this configuration and install CH530 (CH531) but since CH531 is officially obsolete, Trane offers Tracer TU with transducers and stepper actuator module.
According to Trane literature and Trane retrofit wirings CVR program can accept DP oil switch and pulsed actuator motor. In few words I want to convert a CVGB unit controls (with “Black Box”) to CVGF controls.
Except pulsed motor actuator everything else is same.
Have you ever done similar retrofit (CVHA, CVHB)? Please let me know your comments.
Why pulsed actuator and DP oil switch instead of stepper actuator and transducers?
Except of cost reduction, I don’t want to “touch” tag operator and there is no need for transducers since CVGF don’t use.

I have done many AdaptiView (TU) and CH531 retrofits. You can configure the controls to accept an oil DP switch input instead of the transducers and set it up to output a pulsed signal instead of a stepper actuator. I really don't understand why you would want to do this as the stepper actuator and transducers is a MUCH better way of controlling the chiller. In the old days, they didn't have this technology but now they do. As far as the actuator, you don't have to touch the tang operator, you simply unbolt the pulsed actuator and bolt in the stepper actuator and set the stroke. You don't have to open up the system or anything like that. The transducers is MUCH better than the DP switch and it is super easy to install. With your line of thinking (the old way works) then you might as well not do the upgrade as the old control system works also. Cars used to have hand cranks to start them and that worked, they also had carburators and that also worked but an electric starter and fuel injection is much better.
Why would you do a controls upgrade on an R12 chiller .
