Charging the stat if it's used in power stealing configuration.
Also may be used for firmware upgrades?

Seems like a joke of a stat but she seemed to like the idea of how much money she was going to save with the leaf. She also kept complaing about how cold it felt in her house though. I kind of wonder if temp is not off set a couple degrees like set for 68a but actual temp is 66.

You might be on to something. Some thermostats are programmed to snap the displayed temperature to whatever the set-point is if it is only off by a couple of degrees. This is so it can have a reasonable dead band and not short cycle the equipment without the homeowner complaining that it is off by one degree.
