I have been using the JB Platinum 7cfm and it has worked great for me. I had a Robinair before and it was ok until it broke. My next pump will probably be the overpriced Appion 8cfm
My current vacuum pump is a Yellow Jacket 6 cfm two-stage. It is getting old with a shorted cord so I am getting a new one. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do primarily residential. I saw a Robin Air 15800 8 cfm two stage for $225.00. Is anyone familiar with this model? On all of my jobs I use nitrogen before the vacuum to check for leaks. Some contractors I know think it is unnecessary. Any thoughts? Thanks you.

I have had a Yellow Jacket "bullet" for one summer now and love it. 7 cfm, 2-stage
8 CFM is big for just resi equipment. I use a 6 CFM on 40 ton units, have no problems.

i have a 5 cfm jb works on everything from 1.5 tons up to 50 tons, will pull a residential unit down in about 15 min. have left it running for 21 consecutive days only stopping to change the oil (10 min) in an unconditioned space. i keep the oil changed and she is about 3 years old, not much paint left on her. still working great.
on a side note a big chunk of rust looking stuff came out on my last oil change, idk what this will mean for the future.
Bought a brand new YJ 6cfm Bullet and a brand new JB Platinum 5cfm.
To my surprise, I prefer the JB!
The Bullet doesn't have a ball valve cut off, and shoots oil out the vent when you turn it on.
BTW, no it's not over filled, it happens even when the oil drops below suggested fill line.
They both vacuum fine, but think the 6cfm is a bit over kill for residential work.
The JB is much quieter.
The only thing I don't like about the JB is the foam handle grip that feels like its going to slip out when carrying.
My prior pumps were Robin-air. I didn't feel they performed as well as either of the other two listed above have.

if your using standard 1/4" hoses and manifold then anything over a 5cfm pump is completely useless as the hoses won't handle anything more
I have heard this but have found it not to be true in my experience. My 7cfm pump can pull a system with a 25' lineset down to 250 micron within 40 min or less whereas my other 5 cfm would take well over an hour maybe closer to 2 hours. Maybe its pump quality but that is definitely how the cookie crumbled for me. I guess I should also mention that I have a 4 port manifold but with the logic you're stating, the 1/2 line that hooks up to the vac pump would be irrelevant.
