manitowok gear motor removal

Gear motor is leaking oil and have removed all the nuts I can find. The evap looks like it slides onto the gear shaft but It will only lift about 1/2 inch and it feels like something is stopping from moving anymore and it is not the ref. piping that is holding it back. Anyone else been in this situation or had experience removing the gear motor from an ice machine like this?

It should lift off. There should be a small gear on on the box and auger sides with a plastic coupling in the middle. From the looks of it there might be a fair amount of crud built up on the parts or the gears are stripped in the coupling and not sitting right . Two pry bars with all the space you have in the mech. room should help and try twisting the parts from the space underneath as you pull up . From the look of it the gear box is probably not the only thing majorly wrong with the machine. If you are in house, need a project and can spend a lot of money on this I'd say go for it but like I said you probably need more stuff like bearings and evaporator and auger. I would defiantly tear it all down and get a list of everything you need for repair instead of getting it one component at a time as you see the problems.

I'd try pulling the auger out of the evaporator first, there should be bolts near the top, holding that bearing on, once those are out you can lift the whole auger and bearing out and see if that helps. Hate to say it, but those SN-12 machines are garbage, you're better off with a Hoshi.

Thanks for the help. The gear motor cost isn't worth it to replace, just ordered a new machine and will part this mess out.

Unfortunately, that's an all too common diagnosis on Manitowoc's flakers, their cubers are some of the best in the industry, but if you want a reliable flaker, look at Hoshizaki
