Heat Pump noise WITH SOUND CLIP for you to listen....
I had a new Amer. Std. Heritage 15 2.5T heat pump with a TAM 7 air handler installed in the summer. In AC mode there is no abnormal sound. I turned the heat on for the first time about two weeks ago and now when it runs in heat mode I hear a sound that seems to be resonating through the line set. The air handler is in the basement and I can really hear it down there. The heat pump is working fine. The dealer came out and verified this is normal in heat mode. What do you think? Is it normal or not? I have included a link for you to listen to the sound I recorded. The recording was taken right along side the lineset in the baesement. 20 seconds into the audio clip you will hear the outside unit shut off. Thanks for all that listen to the clip and let me know their technical opinion.

Not unusual to have noise in heat mode instead of cool mode since when heating the hot gas from the compressor is sent straight inside. Compressor noise tends to transmit straight in. Rare to hear of that with a recip, more commonly from a scroll compressor.

Does this mean the recip compressor has a possibility of premature failure or is this just a "sound" by product versus a defect.

I can definitely hear mechanical noise (and the sound of refrigerant flow) transmitted through the lineset from the 2 reciprocating compressors in my Trane heat pump, especially in heat mode. I don't find anything unusual with the sound clip you posted.

I heard it shut down at the end of the clip, but maybe I am just an idiot for thinking that that was the sound he was talking about.

I slowed down the sound and I heard " Hard to stop a Trane".
When played backwards I heard " Goodman suck".

Sounded okay to me. My dog didn't like me playing the sound clip though.

It's normal. The sound will be quieter once it gets cold out.

Thanks to all that replied. I feel better now. On a side note my old heat pump had a Copeland scroll and the neighbor just got a brand new Carrier with a Copeland scroll as well. Both those units sounded the same in heating or cooling mode. Is it because the my unit has a recip? Just curious.
