Hey all. I've been dormant from the HOS lately. Busy on a project and not as much hackery on a daily basis these days.

SO far most of the installs from this co's guys are pretty good. But then there are a few I come across every now and then that bug me. Especially because it brings back flashbacks from the daily installs seen from D.S.C. in Phoenix.

Pop up in an attic to do a heating maintenance.
Not much room to sit up here is there?

ESPECIALLY this unit. For some strange reason. Instead of going UP and over the firnace with the flue pipe. The installers came out, DOWN slightly, then along the FRONT access area with the flue then back up and over to the section going through the roof.

I could NOT stand or sit anywhere to work on that suker. I would get burned when I touched the flue as well.

That's NOT the worst of it!

Take a gander at each evap coil...

Each one has the line sets and access panel up against the wall behind the furnaces!!!!

As I clocked out, I mentioned to the dispatcher in the office that "the evap coils are unservicable here."

Her response was "... well, you'll have to if they need it".

I can't believe how lame some people in the office can be.

I again said "NO. They are NOT. Unless you send two (installers) back out to pull the coil when it needs service/repairs!!!!"

These were attached to 19i condensers.

Now. Should we continue the debate on weather you can flip these coils or not?

When I looked around more. I saw that there was NO REASON they could not have layed the furnaces the other way and reversed the supply and return ductwork on both systems. There WAS enough room to do that.

Hmm, if they had turned them around the other way, it looks like it would have made the whole thing easier.
Everything would have connected to the front of the coils, the vent pipe wold have been a snap, and the gas would be out the bottom.
Two 90's and a couple of short nipples and the gas line could have been run out the bottom the way the furnaces are in there now.

Make some photo copies of the venting tables in the instructions that come with the furnaces, hand them out to all the installers and the install manager.

I see some single wall pipe in an unconditioned space too...
If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

Single Wall? I didn't notice any. Looked like all B-Vent dbl wall. Unless you are looking at that awesome FLEX DUCT for the clothes dryer vent LOL!!!

I would like the office manager to view these in the office. That way they will know what I mean when I say "Not Servicable!"

It looks kind of like one of the furnaces has a single wall elbow off the inducer. It could just be an optical illusion due to the foil tape though.
The foil tape is another issue in itself though. If you feel the need to use foil tape on a vent pipe, you're likely not installing the pipe correctly anyway...

on that crap in the future. The H.O.pays down the road when everything's out of warranty.

I dont think any of that Sh!t would ever happen if they(builder) would just put the FACKER'S in the garage or a mechanical room and not in a tight a$$ attic.I dont know what part of the year the systems were installed but if it was hot in the attic. The installers probally just wanted to hurry up and get the SH!T done with and get out of the attic. Instead of doing it right.

the only way they are remotely thought of as being " servicable " is with a screwdriver, hammer, and a pair of doublecuts ( elec. shears ). all of the above described ways of making it service friendly would have meant that the installers had to quit "tokin' up" that day during the job but as the old saying goes.... looks good from my house! LOL. this is pathetic. I wish there were more people in the trade that gave a sh*t about quality. kbghdg is right. if they would have a nationwide ban on attic installs, it would eventually eliminate this headache. also if they had a manditory 3ft by 3ft minimum inside dimension for AHU closets it would help keep us from having to shoehorn higher seer equipment in where it won't fit.

Seems like about half the installs we have had lately have been in attics but none of them look like this one lol. No matter how tight it is if the installer cares and has half a brain even a high seer unit can be installed in an attic and still look good and work good. The big thing we have run into with these high seer units in attics is getting those heavy arsed VS furnaces and airhandlers through the 12 foot ceiling skuttle holes. here lately we have been rigging a comealong and pumping them up. Not great way to do it but beats having to break your back. One last statement is that if one of our installer teams did a job that looked like this they would be looking for work elsewhere as soon as I saw it. Remember it does'nt have to look good to run good but looking good sure helps when it comes time to collect the money and money is what it's all about.
