York 5 ton heat exchangers

Finding lots of cracked York exchanges this year as usual. I have found one screw on the bottom section of the heat exchanger behind the burner controls section a huge pan in the a** to remove. Am I alone in this trouble and are there any tricks for getting this I am not aware of? I find I usually just take out the blower and reach around with a open end wrench which works until the screw strips

I use a pocket cresent wrench. It's still a PITA.

Are these cracked H. E. on the 80% or 90% furnaces? You meant to say furnaces with the 5 ton blowers?

Do you remember the size of the filters used or which side of the furnace the RA drop is on?

Does York have a reason for this happening or do they say it's because of a poor installation?

Most of the time I use a couple of 12" drill extensions put together... Or a 5/16" gearwrench.

The hard part is not ripping all the insulation up so bad that it comes out the diffusers in the store.

I am talking 5 ton package RTU. Filters are 2 15x20x2 and 1 14x25x2. Installation is fine, I believe it is just a problem with these particular York units that the heat exchangers have a tendency to crack. I have also tried the multiple extension bits with 5/16 bit on the end to remove that effen screw however I need to remove the screws for the burner control section and hammer the panel back just to get a bit on the screw.... what a pain

Depending on the unit, I use either a 1/4 x 5/16 offset box ratchet, or an extension.

I bend the tube supports inward for removal of the old HX, and I slide sheet metal down the sides over the insulation (hanging on the top edge of the sides) to place the new HX into place without ripping up the insulation.

We do this as well.... Works pretty good.

Any of you ever tried putting a piece of sheetmetal on sides of HX while removing and installing? One of the techs in my company did this to protect insulation and I believe it worked.

York sunline heat exchangers are i.m.o by far the most time consuming ones to replace. I'm glad they decided to sandwich the insulation between metal at the factory now. It's just the screws and taking apart everything ...

If the furnaces were tuned with CA, airflow was set correctly, and a 2 min post purge was installed, then we wouldn't have to replace these heat exchangers so often.

but, then a lot of us would be short on a job.
