    Question Capacitors

    Starting fall checks and I would like to know at what percentage below the rated MFD you would recomened changing it out to a home owner. Thanks

    Check the label. Most are + or - .06%. But some are 10%.

    Top of my head, MAX tolerance is 10% Run Cap, 20% Start Cap.

    Thats the manufacturing tolerance, that it could be off by when its brand new.

    We say could / should at 5 or 6 % and needs at 10%.
    Also, inform the client what motor the capacitor is connected to and may damage if too low.

    Rule of thumb for the MOTOR's tolerance is 10%. As said before - the +- rating on the capacitor itself if the manufacturing tolerance. A 5mfd +- 6% could be 4.7 right out of the box.
