I too, would look at the HX before taking any time to troubleshoot the 3 wire...

Is this unit on LP? I think carrier had an add-on lock out timer, and gas pressure switch that tied into in incoming pressure tap of gas valve. I have changed many lock out timers for this problem over the years. As many have said though, I would check hx, that model was bad about holes in cells right above burner opening of face plate.
