I know this has probably been covered numerous times, but, does a pleated air filter like a 3-M Filtrete have a higher restriction than a regular fiberglass filter? If it does, will this affect the A/C's performance due to reduced airflow? Does the MERV rating have any correlation to restriction?

    Yes

Yes,but it depends on the duct systems ESP,before adding the 3M.Note ,most can't handle it.

    Yes,sort of,generally a 1" merv12,would be more restrictive then a 4" merv12,of the same size,like 20X20.

3M kills heatpumps for me in the winter so I can sell new ones in the spring.

Sometimes you can get away with speeding up a fan motor to compensate for the difference in static pressure, but this isn't always an option. Interesting that this design consideration is never mentioned on the pre-shrunk, sterilized filter package.

    Talking

I have actually measured the most expensive purple filtrete
20x30x1 filter to restrict 100 cfms. The size of a small bedroom. you can also overheat a furnace with these if your return is too small. By I'm sure it works great in the 3m lab.
