York YK Centrifugal Chiller

We have 3 YK series york chillers R134a cooling capacity 1500 Tons.One of the chiller is surging too much condenser Sub cooling is around 10 Deg F.Its motor is 3.3Kv,Ampares are are fluctuating between 70 to 95.Any body can tell what is possible cause.Thanks.

Post all the operating data for the Chiller without it we would all be guessing as to the cause !

All the data you would normally take during an operating inspection. Entering and leaving CHW temps, same for condenser, evaporator pressure, discharge pressure, saturated suction, saturated condenser, discharge temp, liquid level in the condenser...you get the idea.

What chiller surging basically is: when there is too high of a pressure difference between the condenser and the evaporator for the non-positive displacement compressor to overcome. As a result, gas flow reverses across the impeller wheel, attempting to stall it. This happens in spurts and is why amp draw fluctuates wildly during surging events...the impeller is working against gas flowing in the wrong direction.

Basic causes:

Fouled cooling tower

Fouled tower sump and/or condenser pump strainers

Fouled condenser tubes

Failure to lower entering condenser water supply setpoint when chiller load is low

Charge not trimmed correctly
