    Is this right?

    I am posting this in "Wall of Shame" because the sump and pump are UGLY.

    It is not HVACR related, but I saw it on a call and thought someone here would have an opinion on it.

    Picture #004 shows the sump pump OFF.

    Picture #007 shows the pump running.


    It may be hard to see, but in the second picture, there is a jet of water spraying out of the side of the PVC pipe.

    I advised the manager of this and showed him. He called in a local plumbing contractor that told him this was normal operation and the hole was to prevent "airlock"

    thats a good excuse.

    The hole is so the pump doesnt start with high head. I guess its cheaper than a check valve. I have seen this done in residential and commercial.
