Probably not any sooner than they have to. Since you usually just throw it away when it breaks.
I kind of wonder if they might not go to using 134a in those? Or 407C?

hard to say, but I imagine 410A and more than likely window units will have either rotory compressors or small recips.

When currently and widely used HCFC refrigerant is about to be banned maybe, and when the demand is high, such that mass production of lower end ACs (window ACs) will be viable.

    My two cents.

Did you mean refrigerant, rather than freon? Freon is a commercial name for R-12 (CCL3F).

I think scrolls will be used for very long time due to the simplicity of its operating principle, and concept.

I can't think of/heard of any new type of revolutionary compressor. But, I won't be surprised if there is any.

If your not getting the results you desire then change. People change from either desperation or inspiration.

Yeah, and clean my ears out with a Q-tip after I have a Coke
The picture in my avatar is of the Houston Ship Channel and was taken from my backyard. I like to sit outside and slap mosquitos while watching countless supertankers, barges and cargo ships of every shape and size carry all sorts of deadly toxins to and fro. It's really beautiful at times.....just don't eat the three eyed fish....

Holy crap, I slightly remember reading this thread quite a long time ago, somebody revived it to say that people saying "freon" makes him mad?
