basic rule of thumb for filter area is MINIMUM of 200 square inches per ton of cooling.
you have 180.
I STRONGLY recommend getting the inches above 200/ton. I prefer 360/ton for long quiet filter life, and ability to use pleated filters.
DO NOT USE 1" PLEATED FILTERS with less than 300 square inches per ton.The TRUE highest cost system is the system not installed properly...

also, blower noise is due to sound wave reflective surfaces in line with the openings.
if you install rough surface insulation in the blower compartment/plenum area and perhaps build air baffles that do not obstruct airflow, your noise will all but disappear!
how much room is there between the front of the air handler, and the doorjam? The TRUE highest cost system is the system not installed properly...

And does it still move 1600 cu.ft if the handler is set on the lowest fan speed, or would it be lower?

would you not use ductboard with insulation facing inside closet to quiet and provide
fire rating? The cure of the part should not be attempted without the cure of the whole. ~Plato
