Do my eyes deceive me or is the low speed shaft scored? I haven't seen many of these old machines. What is the spec for the bearings?

The bearings are not removed from the gears in the picture, the bearing clearence is within tolerance, the shiny center is created by how the bearings have friction against the other half of the gears cover.
