I have a Carrier system - Model 38YRA042310 (I think they call it a split system). I would like to move the compressor from the back of the house to the side (about 50-60 feet). Does anyone know how easy, expensive and who the right type of people are to do this (do I call a general contractor or an airconditioning sales/service team)? thanks

I'd call a few good qualified heating & air contractors for estimates. To see what kind of price is out there. If you don't have one you use, get references from people you trust.
Depending on where the lineset goes, it could be pretty easy or it could be a royal pain to do this.
Depending on the age of this heat pump, it may be more cost-effective to hold off on this until replacement.
As they will be opening the system, make sure the contractor will pressure test his work, pull a good deep vacuum and recharge the system appropriately.
Also: I could be wrong, but it sems to me that sometimes when you move a condenser that has gotten comfortable in it's current location, and waaaay extend the lineset length in the process, then the compressor might not be so comfortable and might come to want a hard-start kit added.

You will need to call a heating and air conditioning company to complete a job like that.It would be impossible to estimate the cost of something like that, with out looking at the job.In some cases there is not enough room to run new copper lines, but most of the time you can find a way around it.

I think of this as any other project:
Number of hours x $/per hour + # of refrigerant for extended lineset + filter.
Let's say number of hours = 5.

You must get a certified AC company to do this...legal matters with the refrigerant. General contractors can not handle the freons. As said above, this could be expensive to do and could be a royal pain in the rear too. Can not give you any idea without seeing the situation. Power has to be moved to the new location as well as the unit and line sets and low voltage wires. Sit down for the quote.Originally posted by homeownerquestion
