IT seems like that would have shutdown on low pressure wayyyy before it got that packed... well unless it's a older unit with no safety switches I suppose.

Is that an old G.E. ? I had one looking the same from the mechanical defrost failing.

Climatuff compressors were originally made by GE not Trane.
If you really know how it works, you have an execellent chance of fixin' er up!

Hence this is why I posted GE / Trane ...Notice how I put GE first....then a slash...then Trane second....

GE built the original line...I and many others are well aware of this... Then right around 1985...Trane purchased the product line from GE.... thus they BOTH had ownership in the climatuff compressor at one point in time.

That's cool. Never seen a unit that iced up. I have seen lots of linesets like that on the roof. Out of sight no one see them.

    Homeowner didn't have a clue?
I just stripped one of those last week... it was from the early 80's and still ran fine. Mechanical defrost, no service valves, and no safeties. I thought about adding service valves and saving it for a spare, but it's just too old.
    Hard to kill for sure!

Climatuffs were the best. It's a shame they can't make a higher efficiency system like that.

    Hmm

I know I'm telling my age , but any of you remember the old GE vacuum defrost , with all the small black rubber hoses that the dirt dobbers loved?

I remember the 1/4" copper tubing they used on the package units with the flared out copper in front of the outdoor motor shaft...which vacuum initiated defrost..... that stuff took knowledge and lots of patience to diagnose properly and repair.....

Yeahhh you just showed your age....so did I
