opinion about Luxaire

i have an agreement with a contractor to install two units in my colonial style house originally we were talking about Carrier units then he told me he could save me some money with York units. I now have a new estimate for Luxaire units TCJF30S41S3A and AHE30B3X21A which are supposed to be made by Johnson Controls & York. My concern is the quality i just would like an honest opinion before i sign and commit with payment. Thanks Tom

it is a subsidiary of Johnson Controls just as Bryant is to Carrier. Researching the contractors knowledge base and business practices is far larger concern than the equipment

thank you he does come highly recommended from various people and out of the five estimates i have gotten he is the only one who came that produced an estimate for what i was asking for. thank you for your reply

The only problem I am concerned about with York/LuxAire is that of the micro-channel all aluminum condenser coil.

It is pretty new and untested technology.

I had the HL6B heat pump
with vs air handler AVG installed
mid june of this year.
the ahu very very quiet, it is
in a closet by living room with
r/a near low on the wall.
I hardly ever hear it come on, except
late at night or early morning when
all is quiet. (no tv..no music etc)

the vs ahu handles the high humidity
here very well.
right now it is 9:21 pm outdoor temp is 84 & RH is 47%
inside it is 73 degrees and 50% RH.

as electric strip is just for emergency/back up
heat savings in winter will make the upgrade
from a/c to heat pump worthwhile.

my electric rates are lower than
other areas @ .08 per KhW.
but I didn't want high
winter heating bills from straight electric
strip heating.

to me the efficiency was second only to
comfort. with the above combination both
have been achieved. I'm really pleased so far.

the only hitch was the tstat. I finally ordered the
t-stat from Luxaire rather than the honeywell
& white rodgers stats that didn't have dehumidification
mode.

not sure if dehumidification is an issue in your location.

invest in sealing your ductwork. an average home has
30% duct loss. make sure that contractor uses only
mastic materials. duct tapes and foil tapes fail in
short lengths of time. esp if in exterme attic temps.

If the price was not to much different, I would prefer the Carrier over the York. That may be due to the fact that we get excellent service from the local Carrier Distributor as opposed to the local York Distributor.

But as mentioned here many times, the quality of the install would take precedence over the name brand of equipment.

Just my opinion.

The HVAC contractor I use carries both. The York Affinity is nearly as expensive as the Carrier Infinity, but I'd consider Infinity far superior for comfort. Otherwise, York has a great warranty and I think hits the price points better on their lower end and midrange equipment than carrier.

On the commercail side at my work, the contractor we use prefers York due to the warranty and the supprot he gets fom his supply house. We have several installed with no issues. Althoug hthey are mostly 5 ton 3 phase light commerical units.
