I've not done this. But my experience has made me wish I did. I don't know what the pundits say. I just know of my experience-the vast majority of problem employees had serious financial problems. Of their own making.
If co's are looking at financial history they must be driven to by they same thing.
It has to do with insurance somehow.
There is some rediculuos claim from actuaries that someone with bad credit has less to loose, and is therefore a more risky person. Whether it be vehicle insurance, or work comp insurance, im not sure.
I know of one person that was hired by a company and then let go a week or so later because of bad credit.
At least that was the claim the tech made during an interview I sat in on a few years back.
i think its b.s. that a persons credit could make or break their chance at a job. some people really fell on hard times & had to exhaust what $$$ they had & use up certain lines of credit .. im glad ive always made it a point to handle my finances to a T so if I ever need to show mine ill be ok but not everyone is as fortunate ..... hell isnt our country in a huge debt ??? lol
It is bs, but any company worth working for won't hinge employment on such nonsense. I think it's more of a "we want service salesmen" type companies that make a big issue of it.
Im sure you can think of the type of company I speak of. Generally residential, and usually have of a lot of expensive ads running non stop. Likely b/c they loose every new customer after a year or less.
Like it or not, many companies are using your credit information as another tool to judge character.
For instance, what does my credit score have to do with what I pay for auto insurance ? Shouldn't my auto insurance rate be dependent upon my driving record ?
Of course it is. Credit health is just another way for employers to judge prospective employees.
And no, I don't like it either !

Employees who have "credit" problems a LOT of times also have child support along with attendance problems (many times due to legal stuff following them around). Might be a great worker, but stuff in the closet makes problems for them constantly. Sad, but many times true. Hire someone with numerous wage garnishments and there is a very slim chance they'll stay once all the garnishments go into effect. It's sad, for both the employee and the folks they owe!!! (Faceless Corporations???? What the heck?)
Let's turn the tables, would you like to work for someone who can't pay their bills?
It is harsh but from experience the worse experience I had with an employee in financial desperation will do things to get hold of $.
Cheat on time sheets , steal material , sell material , sell company tools. Also you are constantly hounded by the employees creditors to see if he is working , has he any $ owed to him , can you pay him 2 days early. You get court orders to garnish $ from their pay and forward to wherever .

I'll not hold it against someone for some of the pitfalls the economic downturn has brought. But from what I've seen the problem child's are from those who made and continue to make stupid financial decisions.
Before I get labeled harsh I have bought tires for employees personal vehicles, loaned them vehicles when their's are down, (in one case loaned for 2 weeks, he had it for two months and then stuck my mechanic who let him pay on credit). I have paid for trips, paid for stuff for kids, paid medical leaves, and on and on. My bad decisions too, none of them are here anymore.
i assume employers think if you are financially strapped there is a better chance you will lie,cheat or steal , i know to get into NSA they check you credit history we have a few guys in our shop that cant get in because of their credit history .

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act employers cant check employees credit reports without employee written consent, in some states is against the law to condition employment upon good credit.
when doubt call the DOL.
It makes me wonder, check my criminal record, check my driving record, check my urine and get a company physical... oh, and we need to make sure you can afford that new camaro you are driving.
