thinking of installing a 13 seer payne condensor
i didn't get a new coil do i need a txv for the new condensor to work i know i will not get the max efficency without it but will it still work

What size evap?
What size condenser?

Will it cool, yes.

Will you still get the btu rating of the condenser, doubtful.

So you could end up with a 2 ton condenser that is only doing the work of 1.5 tons.

So you could end up paying a higher electric bill, and it not cooling enough.

I am in a similar situation as rdave (2ton A/S Allegiance 11 + matching coil). How do I find out if adding a TXV will pay for itself in increased efficiency, or if I should rather spend the $ on say additional attic insulation?

stefanoc72 - If the TXV would be beneficial to your matchup A/S will list it as an option and give a rating for it. The insulation will probably pay for itself faster than the TXV. You will realize the benefit of insulation during heating and cooling.

rdave - your system will operate better and be easier to setup with the TXV since the coil is likely not matched to the condenser.

As comfortdoc said, adding insulation will do more then a TXV.

A TXV is not a magic device that can make indoor coils compatible with any outdoor condenser.

The TXV will help keep the indoor coil colder.

I would definetly add the txv, especially when not matching the coil, to protect the compressor. When you don't match, effeciency in thrown out the window, but that's not to say you can't have a functioning system.It might even remove more latent heat with the smaller coil....(less humidity).
