Scotsman "eye issues"
I have a CME506RS-1F with "eye issues". Currently the customer is resetting the unit before I get there and they do not know which red light is blinking. I cleaned the eyes and monitored 2 batches. I noticed during harvest that the bin full light flashes only occasionally (if at all) during the ice drop. I am very familiar with this brand of machines and know this is not normal and is responsible for the lock out issues. It seems that the eyes are slow to respond (maybe 2 seconds or more) even when manually blocking the eyes with my hand. The history on this machine is new controller and transformer 12/09 and new eyes 11/09 and 8/09 and 7/09 and 12/08 all per Scotsman tech service. The history goes back even farther than this.
Any constructive ideas? I will monitor this unit again tomorrow to see what is happening.
Thanks in advance for any input.
is having a set to put in an option..seen em be erratic before..
unless they could give ya the failure code BEFORE resetting...
are they aware it makes your job harder when they reset it ???
You mentioned a new controller. Was it programmed for the model of the machine?(blue controller)
Controller set to proper model.
Went back this am and found refrigeration light blinking 2 times. Did not sense ice. According to Scotsman web site you can dump 10 to 20 cubes in a batch down the chute and check the eyes. Did that and nothing registered. Called Scotsman Tech service and they said to replace the eyes. All voltages (low and hi) in proper range. They are unable to say why the eyes get weak. Other machines I service do not have this same problem.
Looking for help to properly serve the customer.
Thanks for your responses.
FYI you can recall the errors in the controller even if the store resets the controller before you get there. I can't recall the procedure but it is explained in the back of the Scotsman service manual. Also I belive that one eye on the sensor is for the bin full signal and the other is for the ice drop signal, could be possible that one is bad and not the other. Have seen this many times. Good luck.
We do it nice cause we do it twice!
check stand pipe .if cubes are to big won,t drop and you will get same code. watch cube size lower stand pipe it will help learn hard way last year

Diagnostic Code Recall
When the controller encounters a condition in the
operation of the ice machine that may be an indicator of a
problem, such as a very long freeze time, it displays a
problem code with the Diagnostic Indicator Lights.
However, if the user resets the controller to get back in
operation, the code is no longer displayed, and with the
black controllers, it could not be recalled.
That has changed with the blue controller. The last two
error codes, if any exist, can be recalled.
To recall the last error codes:
1. Switch the unit Off by holding the Off button in for longer
than 3 seconds.
2. Hold the Off button down again until the Purge Setting
indicators (Green Lights) are on.
3. Push and release the Harvest button.
The last error code (if any) will be displayed and the purge
setting code will disappear.
4. Push the Harvest button again and the second-to-last
error code ANDthe Bin Full light will be displayed. Only two
error codes are available for display.
If no error code exists, no code will be displayed and there
will be NO LIGHTS showing.
Pushing Harvest again will toggle back to the last error
code and the bin full light will go out.
Pushing it again will toggle back to the second-to-last error
code and also switch on the Bin Full light.
5. To return from the display of the last error, do nothing for
60 seconds or push and hold the Off button until the off light
After returning from the display of the last error (Off light is
on), the machine maybe returned to the ice making process
by pushing and releasing the Freeze button.

Go to page 144 for controller diagnostics.
Thanks to all for your input. I will check the drain tube level for ice thickness.
Thanks for the recall info from the service manual. I didn't have my books or laptop with me on the first call.
