    Typical overtime policies?

I'm an in house HVACR technician for a McDonald's franchise. I'm the only one in the company that does HVACR. I'm an employee not an independent contractor.

I only get overtime after 8 hours if the call was placed the same day after 12pm. If I have a week day off and get called in for an emergency I do not get overtime. If its a weekend, however, I do. They told me if I work over 8 hours in a day I have to put the extra hours on a different day on my time card so they don't have to legally pay me overtime. I'm paid 1/2 rate for picking up parts, drive time, paperwork/administrative tasks.

Is this normal/fair? Do you guys get overtime after 8 hours in one day regardless of when the call was placed? Are you guys on call every single week? Do you get paid the same rate for administrative stuff? Do you get commission on parts or profit share?

    Yea that doesn't sound legal.

I get paid overtime after 40 not 8.

If I cut out early and I work late the next day it washes out.

ANY call outs or weekend jobs iz overtime.

Sundays and holidays are double bubble.

I would have a talk with whomever is trying to bypass your legal rights.

    Non-tech tasks

What about other tasks like parts and drive time between stores?

You should be getting paid your hourly rate to do anything that pertains to the job. Never heard of getting paid half your pay to do this stuff

Part of my job is to maintain a well stocked truck. This means regular visits to the supply house to replenish that stock. Also, part of that is to pick up those odd-ball parts that I may not have in stock.

If I serviced a single location, then driving from point to point wouldn't be an issue. I'd drive my personal vehicle to work, collect my tools and go to work. After 8, I'd wrap it and go home with my cell phone turned OFF.

Your employer wants you to service multiple locations, then driving to those locations is now part of your JOB.

Your employer wants to interrupt your scheduled day OFF with his problems? Then you get OT for that, whether it is Wednesday at 11AM or Saturday at 11:30 PM.

They did however start me at $40/hr. So I feel like I shouldn't be complaining. Is that enough to not complain about those other things?

Can you imagine getting chewed out for showing up late by Grimace ? Or getting your employee evaluation from Major McCheese ?

Why is it that those who complain the most contribute the least?

I have worked at a couple shops and the worst one was not as cheap as your Mc Manager.
I would seek other employment. Ronald wont get rich if you keep cutting in on the profits.

I was always paid by my old employer, and when I opened my shop, did the same with my guys hired...
Time and a half after 40 hours, no matter what they were doing. Install, windshield time, loading/restocking etc.

Sounds to me like they are a little shady there, but the hourly rate is no joke in this economy either (at least not in my region)

I guess only you can look a the check at the end of the week and decide if it's working out for you. Never hurts to interview and see what else is out there...
