Thread: 14 SEER?

    I have a new RUUD AC system that s suppose to be 14 SEER.
    The RUUD/RHEEM spec sheets show it to be 13 nominal, and it can only reach 14 if a certain coil and furnace blower are used.

    Here is my stuff:
    condensing unit: RUUD/RHEEM model no: UAND042JAZ
    evap unit: RHEEM model# RCFAHM4821AC
    furnace blower: GOODMAN model#GMP100-4 (rev 13)

    Can it all reach 14 SEER?

    Nice unit but like most, it will only reach 14 SEER with select variable speed indoor units. With standard blower, 13 SEER.

    This setup was sold to me as a 14 SEER. It is a 3.5 ton condensing unit and a 4 ton evap and blower. My house is still gets to 80+ when it's really hot. I was told I could be upgraded to a RUUD 4 ton "heavy", which pull more moisture from the air than a standard RUUD 4 ton.

    What is a 4 ton heavy? Anyone heard of it?

    Never heard of "heavy".


    Increasing the size of the system ,isn't really an "upgrade" and likely is not needed.If you have them do it be sure they increase the duct system sizes ,as needed to handle the extra air flow.


    Before increasing the size;

    1.Confirm that the system is producing it's rated btus.

    2.Confirm that duct air leakage is not the problem.

    3.Confirm that undersized ducts are not the problem.

    4.Look at ways to reduce the capacity needed to cool the home. Add insulation to the attic and crawl space,tint east and west facing glass,etc.,etc..


    Always have a Manual J load calculation done ,to confirm equipment size needed before increasing the size.
