Hello, new HVAC student here. Hey is it cheaper to buy one of these portable kits with empty tanks or piece together what I need to braze with? $300 to put 2 pieces of copper tube together just seems awfully rich. Thanks
And to answer your question, 300 for one system, you are correct, 300 for hundreds of systems starts to make sense. Individual tanks are in the hunnert range, so a combo set at 300 is really cost wise and pays for itself over time.
If thinking was easy,
everyone would do it!

I have the Captain Hooks and hardly use them. Purchase a torch set with good regulators and buy the Captain Hooks later on. Learn and practice using standard tips.
It's a 30 dollar tip and he won't burn the surroundings till he figures that out.
I have the turbo, air/acetylene and all the various tips. If your welding consistently on larger pipe and wide open spaces that's just one thing. Many different welding jobs require the right choice in equipment. What about the tight space ones ? Do you use the same torch ? I don't use the hook every weld of course not. But when I can't get my torch on all sides and have to stay off combustibles it the right tip to use.
It's obvious you've never owned the hook. Count the flame tips and go look at yours. Come back to me when you want advanced education.
I sure don't own the hook. You're right about that. I could see the value in having the larger ones, but I don't think the small one would be worth it.
By the way, I was speaking specifically about the pipe in the picture - it's like 3/4" for crying out loud!

I wonder how many things you've burned up not having one ?

The picture wasn't a reference to the pipe. It was a reference to the hook for crying out loud !!
I think its billy or billg thats posted a few pics a few months back showing his brazing. Was standard 3/8 3/4 lines and he used the hook. Have to say they may have been the best, cleanest looking joints I have ever seen.
I personally dont have one, but after seeing those joints I have been shopping around.
To the op; a good set or torches will last many a years. My first set I bought used from a guy that bought them used and they worked just fine. So you figure $300 over 15 years is nothing.
And figure on using your torch 3-4 times a week minimum if you do service and use them every day if you are doing installs.
You think 300 is bad wait till you start getting into combustion analyzers and other specialty tools.

Ive got a set of torches here at the house that I used for years.... the tip is big... and its been reamed out badly so many times.. but I was used to it.... and I used it for many years doing everything from cap tubes to 2/38 inch copper.
It all depends on what you are used to.....
Im not big on devices like the capn hook because I never used one...... but if it helps someone do a better job... more power to them. Just wouldnt come to rely on it... unless you have a spare and there are some tight places I believe one would have a hard time getting that thing in to.
