Thread: why

As I said before I've been the technician before for a service company and have done it for a few years. I still do it for myself and help an old friend of mine out on weekends. Now, I mainly run service for my apartment community and help out with another.
My question is this, Why do most of you think lesser of a guy who does apartment or condo maintenance than someone who does just service or installations? I see it on here all the time, the put downs, the insults and so on.
In my job not only do I need to have a clear understanding and knowledge of hvac, but also all major household appliances, carpentry, painting and drywall. Also I need to have the ability to repair mech. gates, maintain pools and common areas. I also need to work on several other things and at the same time be able to stay in a tight budget and keep logs and paperwork in proper order. I hold several certifications and attend training all the time.
So I'm asking, why is it?

well several things can attribute to this.you are missing all the discruntle customers, and you know the equipment that is at your location. you miss the calls that some home owner tried and fix his own unit, or they bought at a yard sale, or that some sales person talked them into buying and not knowing how hard parts are to get. or a unit that somebody jammed into a hole that was near big enough for the unit let alone the uniy and you. the other thing you miss is driving out to somebodies house and find nine other service companies there. ....... sounds like i am complaining but i wouldnt trade it for the world.....

08-19-2006, 01:24 AM #4Good Question. You know I do installation of appliances and repair. I have do carpet, plumbing, satellits, televisions, even built my own house. I am not stupid but I am not the smartest. Everyone think it is so cool of what I do especially being a woman. But I see it here as well. I get the ****y remarks, but you know I just let it ride. Not everyone do just sevice or installations.Originally posted by workhorse

I'm with you workhorse.I work in a hospital and work on everything from beds to boilers. Nothing against women but dealing with a bunch in a dept. who cant decide where they want stuff installed, or want to rearrange the office every 3 weeks is a PITA. Had one screaming because their brand new water cooled Hosi ice machine wasn't installed yet. Maybe it's because you havent decided what color you want the new counter top THAT HAS YET to be installed isn't there yet! Had to p.m. the morgue cooler and freezer yesterday. I couldn't understand why no one wanted to come in and watch. They stand there and give their 2 cents on every other job!
There's TREACHERY AFOOT!!!

08-19-2006, 09:54 AM #7Yes there are downfalls to each side. While those on the service side is some of the things posted, how about some of these downfalls. Resident does not own the equipment so takes less responsibilty for them, not changing filters, pulling filter out and not replacing with new, the resident who has to wait day for repair, the resident that figures they deserve a new unit because the coil is dirty and the pay $xxx for rent. The list goes on and on. I may know the equipment I work on but the problems consistantly change.Originally posted by cool tech 64

Now when I started this thread I was not intended to mean that anyone job is better then another. I clearly understand that each job and each field is unique. There many differences along with downfalls and benifits with each different jobs.

To be honest workhorse and his companion smokin68 are janitors pretending to be service techs. There are many talented maintenance guys but you are not one of them, maybe the reason why techs look down on you is because you deserve it. Now go and mop some floors or fix a toilet, enough of this pity party!!

It's probably because the typical apartment maintenance guys are carpenters pretending to be HVAC repair men. I have several complex guys call a year. When I start asking for details, they usually can't provide a single line temp.
"60 over 200. It aint coolin right. What else could you possibly want to know?"
I'm not saying that describes you, Shane, but that's the image that your brothers in trade promote.Merry Christmas
