so it doesnt rust out and leak!!!! and the closer to the txv the better any crud that could be in the lines from assembly will go into the drier not the txv
not only that, but alot of times it's easier to get to inside if you have to change it in the future. and driers are supposed to be installed vertically, so they don't trap oil in the canister.....makes that easier too.
Sportland Heat Pump filter drier:
The drier may be installed in any position vertical or horizontal
and with feed in either direction. Where possible, the horizontal
position is preferred.
Catch-All Filter-Driers are most effective in the liquid line. Place the
filter-drier immediately ahead of other liquid line controls, such as the
thermostatic expansion valve, solenoid valve, and SeeAll Moisture &
Liquid Indicator. When applied in this way, the Catch-All provides
maximum protection for the expansion valve and solenoid valve from
dirt that may be in the system. If the system contains appreciable
moisture, then this location gives the best results in protecting the
expansion valve from freeze-up. If possible, place the filter-drier in a
cold location. The acid removal ability of the Catch-All Filter-Drier is
the same whether it is installed in the liquid line or suction line. End:
Note they say to place the drier in a cold location, do you know why? This is a better environment for the drier to retain the moisture it has collected. By heating up the drier it can cause it to release the moisture it has collected. Having the drier outside in the sun is not a good location.
Best practice:
Place Heat Pump filter driers horizontal.
Place all liquid line filter driers indoors just before the TXV in a cool indoor environment. "If possible, place the filter-drier in a
cold location."

my 30 years in the trade says I do not agree.... i have never had a problem..... and I actually installed a drier inside the other day just to say I had done it .... guess what ...it worked like the thousands of other installs I have done...
it was working.... played with it.... now its broke.... whats the going hourly rate for HVAC repair
If you pull good vacs and practice good workmanship it may not mater where the drier goes. I have been doing HVAC 35 years and I am still learning and doing what I learn. I have also had many outdoor filter driers rust out including suction accumulators.
