I pulled a tiny factory dryer, must have been a 032 out of 5 ton circuit a few weeks ago. Clogged!!!! WHat the Hell was designer thinking? Lol
they believe their factories are controlled environments and this allows them to use smaller driers.
i just found this info out the other day.
the first 2 numbers on the drier is the size of the drier and the last number is connection size.
ex;
163s = 16cu in and 3/8 sweat
164s = 16cu in 1/2" sweat
165s = 16cu in 5/8 sweat
607s = 60cu in 7/8 sweat
and so forth. never really paid attention until an ol' timer told me
034 = 3CI
034 = 1/2" solder
034/2.5 = 5/16 solder

Yea they all come with the stubbs. At least the Carrier replacement headers do. I don't use the stubs, the seem redundant and extend the header.
I just toss them in one of my truck compartments and use them as street couplings. I've done 6 total in almost twenty years. A couple more after this repair. To be honest I think they're easier to replace than going back with a TXV retro kit.
With that said too many TXVs are scrapped do to tech incompetence and they do seem to be more rugged than these fixed orifice headers.
But the retro kits are ridiculously expensive. It's hard to convince a customer from one metering device to another when the difference in Price is so exorbitant.
If you ever wanna try retro-fitting a carrier RTU with a TXV. All you gotta do is contact Sporlan with the size of your distributor tubes and how many you have...they will tell you exactly what you need and give you all the part numbers so you can order it from your local Sporlan Rep. I found this to be less time consuming then trying to wait on Carrier just so they can tell you the header is on back order. Ive been doing these retro fits for a while now and no problems as of yet.
KB Cool - I usually go through ARS Tempe to order these parts there usually pretty good about ordering from sporlan..... just a heads up if you ever wanna try it.

you can make one your self 3/16 copper. Or 1/8 in I used 3/16in. Piston holder from old coil 4 or 6 feeder remove them 3 in. 7/8 copper. 24 in on each 3/16 feeder . Cut out header. Add a 1 piston at btu. recharge. Do not need a TXV. , The mfg 5 ton hole is .028 in each all Have trash in each. Txv better on refrigeration not A/C.
i would disagree about the TXV comment. Good job though.
good job pyramidhvac. i personally like converting to txv valves. havent had any problems or callbacks.

I hate those Carriers with the condenser side lower than the evaporator side. The locally owned Union shop I was working for sent the Foreman and an Apprentice, who by the way knows nothing about HVACR, after I let them know about the restriction on two units. All they did was double the nameplate charge!
On jobs like this I've always found that thermite grenades can be very handy. Oh right, never mind.
