Leaking capacitors don't stop leaking once they start.
Manufacturers put a set amount of liquid/Jell inside to help cool the cap.
Heat is one of the killers of of caps, like excess voltage.
The caps days are numbered once they start leaking.
Replace it and save yourself a call back.Instead of learning the tricks of the trade, learn the trade.

If the cap is old it could contain PCB's polychlorobiphenyls. I don't remember exactly when PCB's were phased out but if old don't play with it.
Tracers work both ways.

The ones with PCB pretty much last forever.
If its leaking, replace it

Some of the gel is supposed to be biodegradable, so even if it isn't weak, it could be "rotten"?
I replace then too, since they are "bad" in the sense of leaking and they should not have the insides on the outside.Col 3:23

It depends on the symptoms. If the problem was a bad contactor and the compressor run cap was leaking I would give the customer the option priced in writing. If the symptom was compressor won't always start then yes I would definitely replace the run cap.

Isn't that what we get paid to do? Replace bad or defective parts? The customer pays us to give our professional (technical) opinion. This is a no brainer, a fluid that needs to be "IN" the capacitor is leaking "OUT". DEFINITELY REPLACE IT!
