    boiler pipe size

    i am just curious but can an 1 1/4'' pipe be able to support 15 zones with 14 of them all pumping 2 GPM to fan coils all at once through 1/2'' pipes? like is it even possible? i am going to hire a contractor but was curious about this.

    It is possible but you are looking at water velocities of 7 ft per sec and a lot of friction loss... about 8 psi per every 100 ft of pipe.

    Go with at least a 1 1/2" L copper pipe and size accordingly.

    I would recommend not passing 6 ft per sec... international code recommends as low as 5 ft per sec.

    In boiler piping for comfort heating, 1-1/4" copper generally tops out at 16GPM.

    To get the 30 GPM he would need. He would need to use a circ capable of moving 30GPM at a head of about 20 foot just for the 1-1/4" primary loop including the fittings. Which would put him needing something in a Taco 1611 model.
