I've put in a new compressor on a med temp temperture reach in cooler, and was wondering ,would a sight glass be accurate in this system,it has a cap tube for refrigerant control.

That won't apply here. The unit uses a bunch of coiled tubing off the high side to evaporate the water in the evaporator drain pan,it was corroded and leaking so I replaced it by coiling my own tubing so the system capacity has changed ,what about a certain super heat or a 20 degree td in coil and box temperture? I don't know ,I don't get to work on a whole lot of refrigeration.

A sight glass would be a waste of time and money on a cap system.

Charge it on superheat, it's the only way to get it right now.
A Diamond is just a piece of coal, that made good under pressure!

I'm going to weigh the charge in as close as I can then check my superheat. But why won't a sight glass work? You wan't only liquid going into the cap tube, right?

Weigh it in to get it close, get the box to temp and tweak it to about 10* superheat at temperature.

if you want to put a sightglass on a system with a cap tube i suggest taking a black sharpie and inking out the glass except in the middle, now you have a MOISTURE indicator.

Also keep a eye on the high side when charging by superheat dont want it to go to high. If it does before the low side comes up then replace the cap-tube. I change the cap tube alot of times when I am replacing the compressor with out even knowing if it is restricted or not. Been disappointed more than once after changing a locked or burnt out compressor only to find out the cap tube is resticted too.

Amen kbghdg, I do the same. I always change cap tube as well even if I don't know if it is restricted. I have been bit too many times from that. Change a compressor and drier on cap tube system and charge up (evacuating of course) only to find captube restricted or runs good for a day then goes bad because the last compressor was a burn-out and it kicked some insulatin (or whatever)around and now the customer thinks it should be a free call(this is warranty right?) CYA
