Bad disconnect

Got a call no power, I was told the unit would cut on and off. Three techs before me and one electrician. Everyone was stumped

They would get weird amp draws, weird voltage, They changed fuses...checked this and that..said the disconnect was bad.. Well sometimes you have to step outside of the box..

As you can see the top left corner of the disconnect the fuse holder was pitted and making for a bad connection when engaged.

Luckily you can swap the bottom fuse holder with the top and Bingo no problems

top right corner...Note: i was able to swap the bottom holder, but didn't leave it that way. I had another disconnect i salvaged. anyway just a tip to check those disconnects.

Three Tech's and a Electrician and they didn't catch that? Yikes.

Funky voltage and amp readings and I go straight to the disconnect.

Check voltage drop across the closed knife switches.

You should hang the old one up in the shop.

Well that's where everything was pointing to. But no one could put there finger on it...like i said it would run, then go down, we get a call. shut the power off check things and then turn it on, recheck and it was fine. I was just there at the right time. Plus i hate getting my butt kicked by a 5 ton.

I would have replaced the disconnect.

I dont think i have ever repaired one. chances are it will fail again they get dirty and lose contact and overheat.

Something simple to tell every newbie Burned = Bad so when they see it they might remember.
I used to get razzed a bit because I had these sayings. Like "Wet insulation is NO insulation" But people remember.
A large part of training is how to have people remember what was taught. Sometimes association like ELI the ICE man. sticks in peoples heads.

I should say because it might not be obvious that ELI the ICE man is a way to remember what leads in different circuits. .E= symbol for voltage L symbol for inductance I symbol for amps C for capacitance So in a inductive circuit volts lead amps and in a capacitive circuit amps lead volts. Just a way to remember.

yeah it is being replaced. I just needed to fix it , so we can run during the heat wave..like i said hero for a day!
