This may not have an easy answer, or any answer, Im buying a home in Ky., its about 20 yrs old, and has a wood burning fireplace, its shallow, and has vents on top and sides, and a blower, Im wondering if it will produce any noticeable heat, or just decorative? Im totally clueless on fireplaces at this time. Im also living in another state right now, so I cant get any more info at this time.

Is the firebox made of steel? Sounds like a Heatilator Mark C or Heatform steel fireplace. Get some pics when you can. If you look up inside the Fp, you should see an ID plate.
If it is steel, check the damper. Most have a piano hinge that rusts out because no one ever install a rain cap. Also, will need a leve II inspection as many of these werer improperly installed not meeting clearances, packing newspaper and such in around those air ducts, etc.Keep the fire inside the fireplace.
