Is Curiosity the first to land without "airbags" surrounding it ? Sounds like it's going to land much the same way as the Lunar Landers did. Only with no on-board pilot.

Viking 1 was the first successful Mars lander to send back useful scientific data. It used thrusters to land on Mars on 20 July 1976.

Thats a great animation. I like how they jetison the jet propelled lowering platform ater the curiosity hits the ground.
American exceptionalism no doubt.
Lockheeds been our customer for years and Ive met some of the mars rover engineers and the shuttle. rescue plane engineers.
Some of those guys are absolutely high functioning autistic or exibit those characteristics.Last edited by Six; 07-09-2012 at 10:51 AM. Reason: cuz i like to party...

I don't recall stating that EVERYONE who worked there was "autistic".
People with High Functioning forms of autism like aspergers syndrome DO however migrate to that type of vocation.
Tell me do you know anyone who fits the characteristics of someone who is high functioning ?
