The Texas Department of Public Safety (state troopers) is already using autonomous drones to patrol the border for drug smuglers and I've seen a TV report that the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department has them in testing.
Do a search and check out the Global Hawk that the USAF plans on deploying. The capabilities are stunning and downright scary. Apparenty this bird can see through a sandstorm, snowstorm, rain and fog and flies at 60,000 ft. I saw a demonstration where it pick out a random carm on a New York freeway and it identified the make, model and year of the car and even told how many passengers were in it and the sex of the occupants. Future Weapons - Discovery Channel I think.
The picture in my avatar is of the Houston Ship Channel and was taken from my backyard. I like to sit outside and slap mosquitos while watching countless supertankers, barges and cargo ships of every shape and size carry all sorts of deadly toxins to and fro. It's really beautiful at times.....just don't eat the three eyed fish....

There is a good article in this month's Air and Space magazine (Smithsonian Air and Space mag) on drones...
One thing I was surprised at... the FAA has not totally worked out airspace rules for drones in the USA yet... due to a variety of reasons.
Yes, they are being used in some area... NO they are not flying all over big cities with large airports... at least not yet.

I recently watched an interview with the Head Legal Council for the Pentagon. He was a typical sleazy, double talking lawyer. He was asked “since it is legal and acceptable for the U.S. to take out high value targets in other countries with our drones is it OK for other countries to do the same to us?”
He did the usual lawyer two-step and did not answer it.
Cutting edge technology is great as long we are the only ones to use it. But as we all know, that doesn’t last forever.

Well... If the USA has the largest military by a HUGE margin (as in we could almost take on the whole world at the same time and stand our ground)... well let someone else send a drone over us... and see what happens to the drone.
It is a dog-eat-dog world when it comes to countries trying to control other countries... no easy way to assert one-self other than to have the bigger stick.
Now It seems to me if the USA wants to be SAFE... we need a govt with a STRONG attitude about "Dont mess with America'...
Softies (like the current administration that bows to Muslims)... are the laughing stock of the world... why would one not take pot-shots at America.
OTOH: Put a hard nozed Texan in there who noes not put up with ANY crap out of any tin-horn dictator... and the USA will be free and safe.
Which USA do folks want to live in... one that is afraid and in danger... or one that is strong and free? PS: do not just give me an answer... vote your answer...

Of course having a military as strong as we do it tends to become a threat to it's own nations, as taught by our founders when they tried to prevent this nation from having a standing army.
